CO Sean Williams (Ely #1) reports fishing opener was very well attended as usual. Angling success was good although the size of walleyes reported were below what was found previous years likely a result of the early spring. Violations included angling without a license in possession, insufficient PFDs on board a watercraft, and expired watercraft registration.

CO Brent Ihnen (Ely #2) spent the week focusing on fishing and boating activity. Time was also spent monitoring AIS compliance.

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Grand Marais) checked anglers in the BWCAW during the fishing opener. The officer also patrolled inland lakes. Some nice lakers and walleye were seen in the bag. Enforcement action was taken for angling and boating violations.

CO Hudson Ledeen (Grand Marais #2) reports that anglers hit area lakes for the annual inland fishing opener. Fishing success varied from lake to lake, but most anglers were able to produce enough fish for a meal or an appetizer. Enforcement action was taken for angling and boating violations.

CO Anthony Bermel (Babbitt) worked a busy fishing opener weekend, as well as early fishing leading up to it. A couple noteworthy contacts were made, including a pair who capsized their canoe and lost some gear on Lake Isabella but made it out safely. Another was a boat check on Birch Lake, where one occupant stated they weren?t fishing due to not having a license but were planning to get one the following day. Observation near their campsite later in the day produced a citation when the same individual was actively angling and admitted to leaving a line out in camp while out angling in the boat. Enforcement action for the week was taken for fishing without a license, minnow trapping violations, extra line, unattended line, attempting to take fish in closed season, and numerous boats without the necessary wearable and throwable PFD safety equipment.

CO Trent Anderson (Tofte) focused on angling enforcement for a busy fishing opener. Many anglers were out appreciating the favorable weather conditions. Enforcement action was taken for various boating and fishing related violations. Boat owners and operators are reminded to verify their navigation lights are in working order.

CO Don Murray (Two Harbors) worked a warmer than usual fishing opener along the North shore. Anglers were finding some fish, but most said they just enjoyed a little sunshine. Enforcement action was taken for license and fishing in closed season violations. Murray also investigated a wetland complaint and illegal use of a closed state trail.

Silver Bay vacant.
